Pulses’ value chain

The Nari Shakti Utpadak Sangh (NSUS) was formed in 2020 by a group of 15 rural women leaders from Osmanabad block in Maharashtra, India, who recognised the benefits of operating a business collectively and the opportunities to scale up production and marketing that came with it.

In 2021, 10 women leaders from four blocks in Osmanabad district started discussing the feasibility of operating a Farmer Producer Company in their area, which would sell a variety of products like vegetables, pulses, goats, dairy, egg and vermicompost.

Vegetable Value Chain

Ten rural women famers and leaders came together to form the Prema Gopalan Producer Company (PGPC), in Osmanabad district, Maharashtra in 2022. The PGPC, which was formally registered in August 2022, has 10 Directors and over 1000 shareholders from Kallam, Bhoom, Washi and Paranda Blocks, who supply the FPO with vegetables.

Pashu Sakhi Priya Tai

Priya Hazare, from Chinchpur Khurd village in Osmanabad District of Maharashtra, learnt about SSP when she joined a goat-rearing support group made up of women farmers in her village in 2021. Goat rearing was a common practice in Priya tai’s village. In 2020, due to insufficient income from farming, Priya tai had begun goat rearing as well. In January 2022, Priya tai eagerly volunteered to attend the Pashu Sakhi training when the opportunity arose.

Joining a collective of women goat farmers improved Anita tai’s livelihood and income. Read her story of change below! Anita Nirmal is a farmer from Pardoli village in Bhoom taluka of Osmanabad, Maharashtra. Coming from a poor and landless household, Anita tai and her husband both worked as daily wage labourers in other farms for many years.
